| Goals and Accomplishments |
Goals and objectives of MPA:
- Protect the marine and coastal habitats
- Restore the productivity and wetland function of the Colorado river delta
- Conserve key protected species such the vaquita, totoaba, marine turtle, desert pupfish among others
- Achive sustainable use of marine commercial species such shrimp, curvina, makarel and blue crab
- Promote low impact activities such ecotourism, aquaculture and sport fishing
Site accomplishments to date:
- First offcial Management Program developed in México
- Involvement of small-scale fishings sectors in conservation and management decisions and participation
- Enforcing regulations in coastal activities such shrimp aquaculture, coastal tourism developments, shrimp trawling operations
- Promotion and involvement in Recovery Strategy for the endangered vaquita
- Promotion and managing ecotourism pilot projects
- Promotion of environmental education campaings
- Participation in World Bird festival, Beach clean up campaing
- Promotion of binational agreements to protect existing Colorado delta wetlands and increase reserach and local participation
- Promotion of alternative fishing activities such blue crab and hooka diving
- Increase awareness and management guidelines for major Federal tourism projects such the Sea of Cortés Nautical Stair
- Include the Reserve and the Colorado delta wetlands in national, regional and international conventions and cooperative agreements such Ramsar, AICAS, MAB, NAWMP among others
- Is now considered as one important Case of a MPA in México with specific fishing/conservation and binational environmental impact conflicts
