| Goals and Accomplishments |
Goals and objectives of MPA:
Goal: To conserve the diversity, abundance and function of all physical & biological resources, in order that they may continue to be enjoyed and productively utilized by present and future generations.
Objectives:
- To protect, conserve and restore the species and genetic diversity of living and non-living marine resources and the ecosystem processes of the marine and coastal area;
- To promote sustainability of existing resource-use, recovery of areas/ resources that have been over-exploited or otherwise damaged and to rehabilitate damaged ecosystems;
- To ensure that local resident users are involved in all phases of the planning and management of the park, share in the benefits of the park and have priority in resource-use and economic opportunity afforded by the establishment of the park;
- To stimulate the rational development of under-utilized natural resources;
- To promote community oriented education and dissemination of information concerning conservation and sustainable use of resources in the marine park;
- To facilitate research and to monitor resource conditions and uses within the park;
- To conserve and protect the historic monuments, ruins and other cultural resources that have been identified as of significance to the history of Mafia Island;
- To facilitate the development of appropriate eco-tourism.
Site accomplishments to date:
- Elimination of dynamite fishing (1996-1998)
- Finalization of management plan and zoning plan through community consultation (2000)
- Recruitment of 22 government staff and construction of 1st phase of HQ buildings (2000-2001)
- Demarcation and implementation of protection zone in Chole Bay (2001)
- Removal of 3 seine nets through gear exchange scheme (2001-ongoing)
- Establishment of seaweed farms/ trial fish cage / micro-finance scheme (2000-ongoing)
- Protection of over 200 turtle nests including over 5000 successful hatchlings to date (2001 - ongoing)
