| Site Overview |
General description of site: The Loreto Bay National Park is located inside the Gulf of California in the east side of the Baja California Peninsula. The park was established in 1996 by the promotion of the Loreto community and the local authorities since 1992. Inside the park there are six communities (Loreto, Juncalito, Nopolo, Puerto Escondido, Ligui and Ensenada Blanca) with approximately 11,000 people. The main features of the park are five large islands, Carmen (151 km2), Coronados (8.5 km2), Danzante (4.9 km2), Monserrat (19.4 km2) and Catalana (43 km2). The islands present dune vegetation and desert scrub with 51 species of reptiles and 33 mammals of which 33 and 12 species are under a protection status by the Mexican Government, respectively.
Date of establishment: July 19, 1996
Area (Km2): 2065
Size of site (S <= 20Km2; M = 20 - 2000Km2; L >= 2000Km2): Large
Ecosystem type/main ecological features:
- Dune vegetation
- Desert scrub
- Mangrove
- Rocky reef, sand and mud flats
- Rodolites
Description of special resources; important ecological features; reason for establishing a protected area: Rocky reefs, sand and mud flats, rodolites beds, and six mangrove estuaries characterize the marine environments. There are recorded 300 macroinvertebrates, six of them under a protection. The fish fauna is composed by at least 260 species, 90% of them use rocky reefs of the park in some life stages. The five sea turtles in the Gulf of California are present in the park, all of them under protection. The bird fauna is composed by 90 terrestrial and 110 aquatic birds, some of them use the islands and small rockeries for nesting (e.g. gulls). The diversity of marine mammals is high with 30 species of the 35 species reported in the Gulf of California, nine of them under protection.

| Goals and Accomplishments |
Goals and objectives of MPA:
Goal: Define and establish management strategies and mechanisms that allow the preservation of the renewable and no-renewable natural resources present in the Loreto Bay National Park and the restoration of critical environments, promoting the social development of the communities living in the zone.
Objectives:
1. Define and establish rules to guide the appropriate development of productive activities as sport fishing, commercial fishing, tourism, and extractive activities directed to the sustainable use of the park natural resources, compatibles with the conservation.
2. Promote the development of scientific research that provide a better knowledge of the area and solutions to the different problems, sustainable use alternatives and present the consequences of the management process, supported with environmental monitoring actions.
3. Promote the development of environmental education and diffusion programs that impulse the community participation in the conservation of the area.
4. Ensure the implementation of the natural resources conservation objectives, the users security and the rules of the park through inspection and guard, supported with the community participation.
Site accomplishments to date:
- No presence of shrimp trawlers
- An enforcement plan to control illegal fishing activities (night dive with compressor)
- A zonification in consensus with the fishermen. The zonification includes temporal fishing zones and zones with restriction in the use of certain type of fishing gear.
- The establishment of two no take fishing zones
